Glare, the new operatic thriller by German/Danish composer Søren Nils Eichberg, opens in the Linbury Studio Theatre next month.

The opera explores the seemingly perfect relationship between a young man – Alex - and his new girlfriend Lea. But as time goes on, Alex becomes suspicious that there might be more to Lea than meets the eye.

Opera director Thaddeus Strassberger expects the piece to appeal to fans of gritty films such as Gaspar Noé’s Irreversible and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive.

The trailer was filmed in a high-rise apartment in Stratford, East London, and stars Sky Ingram and Amar Muchhala who sing the roles of Lea and Alex in the opera.

‘I was looking to plant a seed of doubt about Lea in the viewers’ minds,’ says the trailer’s director Ruairi Watson. ‘We see her and Alex blissfully in love outside her flat, but behind closed doors we see another side – an uncanny, inhuman side – to her.’

Ruairi worked closely on the film with the production’s director. Watch an interview with Thaddeus Strassberger about what has inspired Glare.

‘It’s a simple love story that starts on a very hopeful note of new love blossoming,’ says Thaddeus. ‘The drama that ensues is figuring out and testing the limits of perfect love versus something that is completely artificial and therefore not perfect.’

Glare runs from 14-22 November 2014. Tickets are still available.
The production is generously supported by the Friends of Covent Garden.
